Arborvitae, Green Giant

Reminiscent of classic Christmas trees, the vigorous evergreen Arborvitae Green Giant is characterized by cheery green and luxuriously thick foliage and its ability to form a privacy-promoting “living wall.”

What distinguishes the lovely Arborvitae Green Giant?

  • Usefulness as a privacy-promoting tree and fantastic wind-breaker.

  • Potential to grow to impressive heights: an average of 40-60 ft. with a 12-18 ft. spread, inching up 3-4 ft. per year.

  • Pyramidal shape, reminiscent of Christmas trees.

  • With its 5-8 hardiness zone rating, it tolerates a variety of soils and climates.

  • Lush jade foliage that bronzes beautifully in the winter.

Keeping up appearances…

This needled evergreen is characterized by its cinnamon-colored bark, flattened lateral branchlets, and woody seed cones. While this gentle giant is a non-flowering type of tree, its needled foliage and pyramidal structure enable it to serve as either a handsome hedge or a stand-alone specimen. Its slightly upright branches ensure that it maintains its natural configuration and furthermore help it to withstand harsh wintry elements of snow and ice, all while showcasing year-round lush foliage. In the summer, oblong green cones emerge from between the Arborvitae Green Giant’s fanned-out and fragrant branchlets; these cones mark the onset of winter when their color transforms to rich russet-brown.

A friendly recommendation.

Aristocratic, low-maintenance, and sturdy, the Arborvitae Green Giant is a tried-and-tested trouble-free favorite when it comes to choosing a resilient and fast-growing privacy tree. In the hotter summers of the southeast, it helps to provide this sun-loving species with some light afternoon shade. Though the Arborvitae Green Giant may be susceptible to rots and bagworm, it is very resilient to serious diseases and pest problems.

Awesome tree trivia!

  • The Arborvitae Green Giant (or “Thuja Green Giant”, as it is otherwise known) is actually a hybrid species cultivated by the pairing of the Thuja Standishi (Japanese Thuja) and the Thuja Plicata (Pacific Redcedar). It belongs to the Cupressaceae family.
  • It has been said that a sole specimen, reputed to be a Thuja Green Giant, was planted at the U.S. National Arboretum in 1967, yet the specimen’s name and identity was confused with that of a similar tree; after extensive research and analysis, experts Susan Martin, Kim Trip, and Robert Marquard resolved the Thuja Green Giant’s identity—it was the first hybrid noted among Thuja plants—and branded it with this specific name.
